Markets have responded extremely negatively to the former Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng’s mini-Budget last month. In response to the reaction, the Bank of England introduced an emergency bond-buying scheme to help affected pension funds. With this support no longer being available, experts are warning that additional support may be needed to prevent an even worse pension fund crisis. Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Brian Byrnes, the head of Personal Finance at Moneybox, outlined which pension schemes have been affected by the events of the last couple of weeks. Mr Byrnes said: “The issues facing pension funds over the last few weeks are confined to a relatively small part of the market. “Defined benefit pension schemes have struggled with liquidity as bond prices have fluctuated much more than is historically normal. “The UK Government finances its spending via bonds, commonly known as ‘gilts’. Gilt prices are usually stable and significantly less volatile than stocks and shares. “However, since the ‘mini-Budget’ announced by the former Chancellor on September 23, we have seen significant volatility in the gilt market as investors effectively charge the UK government more to borrow the money they will need to finance their planned tax cuts.” A consequence of this market turmoil has been that defined benefit schemes have been adversely affected as gilts are used to pay for the retirees incomes. To address the volatility, the Bank of England had been buying long-dated gilts, which make up a large proportion of retirement funds, to ease market concerns. Following this, the rate demanded to hold Government debt rose as pension funds attempted to raise billions to meet cash calls.

Though I found much of what I was presented with as shocking, it goes without saying that viewers should apply their own critical faculties. It is noteworthy that many of those on the other side of the argument are not represented in the films, though they were offered the right to reply. But if its overall thesis is correct, the entire history of the Labour Party over the last seven years will need to be recast, and Corbyn himself should be seen as the largely innocent victim of a media witch hunt, rather than the rancid antisemitism enabler portrayed in the run-up to the 2019 election and thereafter.

Only 49 per cent of Bristol City Council staff agreed that senior leaders “are trustworthy and act with integrity”, with one in 10 council workers disagreeing with that statement. An annual staff survey, filled out by more than 3,500, showed ongoing concerns about top council bosses. While the results have improved since recent years, the latest staff survey reveals problems still persist. Councillors on the human resources committee will consider the results and grill council bosses on how trust in bosses can be improved, on Thursday. A recent committee report said: “We can see an ongoing trend that the number of colleagues who feel that senior leaders understand the challenges of their day-to-day work is low. Detailed proposals for providing “audacious” support to Kiev’s “maritime raiding operations” were drafted at the request of Chris Donnelly, a senior British Army intelligence operative and veteran high ranking NATO advisor. The wide-ranging plan’s core component was “destruction of the bridge over the Kerch Strait.” Documents and correspondence plotting the operation were provided to The Grayzone by an anonymous source. Of these assorted plans, only the “Kerch Bridge Raid CONOPS [concept of operation]” is subject to a dedicated annex at the conclusion of Ward’s report, underlining its significance. The content amounts to direct, detailed advocacy for the commission of what could constitute a grave war crime. Markedly, in plotting ways to destroy a major passenger bridge, there is no reference to avoiding civilian casualties. Across three separate pages, alongside diagrams, the author spells out the terms of the “mission” – “[disabling] the Kerch Bridge in a way that is audacious, disrupts road and rail access to Crimea and maritime access to the Sea of Azov.” Ward suggests that destroying the bridge “would require a cruise missile battery to hit the two concrete pillars either side of the central steel arch, which will cause a complete structural failure,” and “prevent any road re-supply from the Russian mainland to Crimea and temporally [sic] disrupt the shipping lane.”

The term is attested in economics from the mid-1970s, and in the sense of hastening the onset of technosociety from the early 2010s, as a new coining attributed to Benjamin Noys, an English professor of Critical Theory. It is in that latter usage, just a decade old, that I use the term in this article. So it comes as a bit of shock to discover that accelerationism is already seemingly everywhere. Accelerationism has apparently been adopted by many of the most powerful people and institutions on the planet. It is widespread and influential. When the World Economic Forum signed its Strategic Partnership with the United Nations, it claimed that the purpose was “to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. In his 2021 letter to shareholders, the CEO of BlackRock, Larry Fink, referred to acceleration seven times: for example, “the pandemic has also accelerated deeper trends”, or “the reallocation of capital accelerated even faster than I anticipated”, and “momentum continues to build, and in 2021 it will acceleratewith dramatic implications for the global economy”. Recently, the UK Government launched its Innovation Accelerator, and, in his recent statement on the alleged British economy growth plan, the Chancellor of the Exchequer (UK Finance Minister), Kwasi Kwarteng, said: [W]e are publishing a list of infrastructure projects that will be prioritised for acceleration[.] [. . .] I can announce that we will accelerate reforms[.] [. . .] We will liberalise planning rules in specified agreed sites, releasing land and accelerating development [. . .] for ten years, there will be accelerated tax reliefs for structures and buildings. During the pseudopandemic, the World Health Organisation established its Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator. The UK Ministry of Defence established its Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) in 2016 as a public-private partnership for the “exploitable innovation” of defence technology. Speaking in 2020, Joe Davis, Chief Economist for the global investment giant Vanguard, wrote an article, pre-empting Fink’s sentiments, discussing how “the pandemic has accelerated some trends already in place”. In a section he entitled The Future Accelerated, he wrote: [T]he pandemic functioned as a call option on employers’ incrementalism. No longer could work-from-home arrangements serve as controlled experiments in productivity; they became indispensable. Ready or not, employers for the most part have successfully enabled secure and efficient work from home and redefined team dynamics. [. . .] COVID-19 has also accelerated the challenges facing restaurants and brick-and-mortar retailers. E-retail and food delivery, already growing in popularity before the pandemic, have become essential to consumers worried about face-to-face interaction. Davis’ statement reveals a bit more about this notion of accelerating. Most of us think of it as the present participle of the verb “accelerate”; simply an adjective to describe motion and little more. But Fink and Davis appear to be among those who ascribe a different meaning to the notion. “Accelerating” to them also implies disruption; a catalyst for change accomplished in leaps and bounds rather than by steady progress. When we then discover that “accelerationism” is a distinct socio-political philosophy, it is reasonable to ask whether all of these “accelerators” are, in fact, based upon an ideology. Is there more to this concept of “acceleration” than meets the eye? Does use of the term by people like Schwab, Fink, Davis and Kwarteng mean more than just “quicken”?

She believes the jabs may well cause human infertility and cites evidence but a ‘cover story’ was released in the news today that the drop in fertility and the birth rate is ‘due to the lockdowns’ which is counter-intuitive. The latest investigation relates to an interview with the author Naomi Wolf in which she claimed women were being harmed by Covid-19 vaccines as part of an effort to “to destroy British civil society”. Ofcom said it would investigate whether the programme broke “rules designed to protect viewers from harmful material” after receiving more than 400 complaints from members of the public. In the interview, which was originally broadcast on 4 October, Wolf also compared doctors’ support for the vaccine rollout to the behaviour of the medical profession in Nazi Germany and described herself as the “last remaining independent journalist” willing to question this. She was being interviewed on the Mark Steyn Show, which has repeatedly raised doubts over the safety of vaccines. Steyn’s claims that the jabs cause “every conceivable kind of damage” have been disputed by factchecking websites. He is already the subject of a separate Ofcom investigation over previous comments about vaccination.

All Roads (and Railways) Leading to China… and the West Ain’t Happy – Finian Cunningham China’s ascendant global power is showing up the increasingly bankrupt condition of the United States and its Western allies. China is succeeding where the British, French and Japanese imperialist powers failed. This year saw the full operation of the China-Laos Railway, the first link in an ambitious Pan-Asian Rail Network that will integrate eight Southeast Asian nations designed to carry freight and millions of passengers. The city of Kunming in China’s southwestern province of Yunnan is the rail and road hub linking the world’s second-biggest economy to its southern neighbors. The Pan-Asian Rail Network covers Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia, converging on the port cities of Kuala Lumpur and Singapore (see map graphic). Kunming, already connected to Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou and other Chinese metropolises, is thus providing a gateway for the entire Southeast Asian region to global trading routes. It represents China’s world-spanning Belt and Road Initiative in action. The China-Laos segment of this transcontinental network was completed in December 2021 – on schedule after five years of construction – with a budget of $6 billion. The other regional segments are still under construction. A network of new motorway “expressways” complement the rail links, the configuration resembling a Chinese fan spreading out. The Pan-Asian Rail Network is planned for completion by 2030 at a total cost of $112 billion. Some 30,000 kms of tracks will be laid, carrying both high-speed and conventional speed trains. Beijing is financing up to 70 percent of the construction costs, with the remainder capitalized through bilateral loans. The overall design is backed by the inter-governmental trade bloc, the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN). It is an awesome mega-project that is aimed at boosting economic growth for the region. Inner land areas are to be opened up for agriculture, tourism and transport of goods.
