‘An indescribable moment’: Indigenous nation in US has right to lands in Canada, court rules Canada’s supreme court decision on the Sinixt people could affirm hunting rights for tens of thousands For decades the Rick Desautel had been told by courts and governments that his people no longer exist in Canada. But Desautel and others in his community in Washington state have long argued that they are descendants of the Sinixt, an Indigenous people whose territory once spanned Canada and the United States. On Friday, Canada’s highest court agreed, ruling that Desautel and the 4,000 other members of the Colville Confederated Tribes in Washington state were successors to the Sinixt – and as a result, that they enjoy constitutionally protected Indigenous rights to hunt their traditional lands in Canada. The closely watched court decision settled longstanding questions over the status of the Sinixt, but it also has the potential to affirm hunting rights in Canada for tens of thousands of Native Americans living in the US dispossessed of traditional territories by an international border drawn hundreds of years ago. “I was so nervous before the decision. I don’t think I slept more than an hour the night before,” said Desautel. “When the decision came through I just let out a huge sigh of relief.” In 1955, after the Sinixt were pushed down into Washington state, the Canadian government declared them extinct. Nearly 60 years later, Rick Desautel decided to challenge the idea that his people no longer existed. In 2010, he crossed into British Columbia without a permit to hunt elk, arguing he had longstanding treaty rights to so. The province of British Columbia disagreed, slapped him with a fine, and fought him all the way to the supreme court.

The Boatyard development sits next to the River Avon in Totterdown, Bristol, and was nearing completion. The future of the 17-storey tower blocks are in doubt after developers, Mid Group, announced their collapse. Employees working for the company have now been made redundant. Clarion Housing Group have been marketing the apartments since early summer. Richard Cook, group development director for Clarion Housing Group, said: “We were saddened about the news relating to Mid Group. “While it will mean a delay to the works, we are firmly committed to completing our Boatyard project on Bath Road and delivering vital affordable housing in Bristol. “We are urgently seeking a solution and will provide an update when we can.” The work was originally scheduled to finish in August.
Bank boss says absolute priority to control inflation as rates jump to 1.75% Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey has insisted controlling rampant inflation is the absolute priority as policymakers delivered the biggest hike in interest rates for 27 years and warned over the longest recession since the financial crisis. Mr Bailey said there are no ifs, no buts over the Banks commitment to bringing inflation back to its 2% target as it warned that the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) will hit 13% later this year due to soaring gas prices. Bank policymakers raised interest rates to 1.75% from 1.25%, the biggest single rise since 1995, as they tried to control the runaway inflation. Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation will hit 13.3% in October, the highest for more than 42 years, if regulator Ofgem hikes the price cap on energy bills to around 3,450, the Banks forecasters said. At a press conference following the rates decision, Mr Bailey said: Returning inflation to its 2% target remains our absolute priority, no ifs, no buts. He said: I recognise the significant impact this will have, and how difficult the cost-of-living challenge will continue to be for many people in the United Kingdom. But if we don’t act now to prevent inflation becoming persistent, the consequences later will be worse, and will require larger increases in interest rates. The comments came as the Bank forecast that rocketing energy prices will push the economy into a five-quarter recession with gross domestic product (GDP) shrinking in the fourth quarter of this year and in each quarter throughout 2023. UK quarterly economic growth (GDP)The dire economic conditions will see real household incomes drop for two years in a row, the first time this has happened since records began in the 1960s. They will drop by 1.5% this year and 2.25% next. However, the recession will at least be shallower than the 2008 crash, with GDP dropping up to 2.1% from its highest point. The Bank said the depth of the drop is more comparable to the recession in the early 1990s. Mr Bailey said there was an economic cost to the war in Ukraine. But I have to be clear, it will not deflect us from setting monetary policy to bring inflation back to the 2% target, he said.

In the evenings, weather permitting, there will be lantern lighting, musicians most welcome, plus a pop-up cinema showing peace and anti-war films. There will be information stalls, an open-air art gallery, plus drop-in discussion-workshops on nuclear weapons, nuclear power, militarism, arms trade, refugees, climate-change and the protest movement. There will also be opportunities for protests at military and nuclear-related sites around the Bristol area. Sunday morning will be available for religious and meditative events. Some people also choose to fast over the four days. On Monday 9th there will be a die-in at 11:02 am to remember the time Nagasaki was bombed. Small company from Cornwall to deliver huge £70 billion Net Zero framework – The Place Group will ‘control, manage and deliver’ the public sector transition to Net Zero = A company based in Cornwall has been given the job of helping to deliver a £70 billion framework to aid the country’s transition to Net Zero – the target of completely negating the amount of greenhouse gases by reducing emissions. The Place Group – which is based at The Regent, Chapel Street, Penzance – has won a huge framework tender to “control, manage and deliver” the public sector transition to Net Zero. It will act as a “middleman” overseeing the framework for services, products, solutions and support for Everything Net Zero via the contracting authority East of England Broadband Network (E2BN). The small company is a “specialist consulting, project management and research company with 18 years’ experience in the field of education”. Its website states: “We have a strong track record of developing winning free school applications and have successfully opened over 100 new schools for clients and trusts across the country. Trusts and schools will be developing their environment strategies ready to meet decarbonisation targets and reach net zero carbon across their estates by 2030 and longer term 2050 under the Climate Change Act. “Place Group provides an end-to-end solution to enable trusts and schools to meet their net zero vision objectives efficiently and effectively through a phased programme approach. This approach, or ‘journey’, is underpinned by our technical and programme management expertise in the educational built environment space, and by our estates supply chain vehicle.” The company has net assets of £344,417 under the directorship of Claire Delaney and Simon Rule. The East of England Broadband Network (E2BN), the contracting authority, is putting in place a framework agreement for use by UK public sector bodies, including schools, colleges and universities, NHS organisations, local authorities, fire and police services, and more. The Place Group won the four-year contract to facilitate the framework for such areas as reducing all emissions especially carbon, increasing the use of sustainable resources, improving recycling, exploiting greener technologies and innovation, greener use of water, electricity, gas, oils, and other fuels including hydrogen, battery and nuclear, and greener transportation. It will also access financing, grants and awards to deliver a “comprehensive greener strategy to meet the needs of education, central and local government and other public sector and associated organisations”. The government Contracts Finder website which states the Place Group has won the network contract has caused some confusion. The company won’t receive £70bn but will oversee a framework of delivery with an estimated turnover of £70bn. The successful bidder was “expected to demonstrate they can impartially control, manage and deliver against the full range of required areas and to maintain and integrate such competing sub-contractors as necessary to ensure choice and flexibility in each category, best value and seamless interoperability. At all times choice, service and cost are of vital importance”. The Government’s long-awaited strategy for reaching net zero emissions was revealed last October, with ministers saying it would create up to 440,000 jobs and “unlock” £90bn in investment in the next decade, most of it from private sector companies. The plan involves an expansion of electric vehicles, including increasing the network of charging points, and further growth of offshore wind, as well as investments in new technologies such as hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel and £120m towards at least one new nuclear power station. Households will benefit from grants to install low-carbon heat pumps as part of a £3.9bn plan for decarbonising heat and buildings, including a £450m three-year boiler upgrade scheme. However, last week, the high court ordered the Government to outline exactly how its net zero policies will achieve emissions targets, after a legal challenge from environmental groups. Friends of the Earth, Client Earth and the Good Law Project had all taken legal action over the Government’s flagship climate change strategy, arguing it had illegally failed to include the policies it needed to deliver the promised emissions cuts. Mr Justice Holgate said the strategy lacked any explanation or quantification of how the government’s plans would achieve the emissions target, and as such had failed to meet its obligations under Climate Change Act (CCA) 2008.

And they are fighting against stricter environmental regulations, not for them. Yet they are winning over liberal-minded people like me who sympathize with the family farmers who provide us with our daily bread and yet receive so little respect from societys ruling elites. And theyre inspiring protests by other farmers across Europe, including in Germany, Poland and Italy. I have praised the current Dutch government for being sensible on matters like climate change. Last year it embraced nuclear energy, one of the first Western nations to do so since the 2011 Fukushima accident spooked the world. But the governments poor treatment of its farmers has shocked me. The prime minister recently called the protesting farmers a holes, and sniffed: It is not acceptable to create dangerous situations. And yet it was a Dutch police officer, not a farmer, who inexplicably fired on a 16-year-old boy driving a tractor. Luckily, he wasnt injured. While nitrogen pollution worsens climate change, the government says its main motivation for reducing it is about protecting its nature areas. Scientists say that in 118 of 162 of the Netherlands nature preserves nitrogen deposits are 50% higher than they should be. Without a doubt the Dutch should do more to protect their nature areas. The country produces four times more nitrogen pollution than the European average, due to its intensive animal agriculture. The Netherlands is the largest exporter of meat in Europe and the second largest exporter of food overall after the United States, a remarkable feat for a nation half the size of Indiana. Food exports generate more than $100 billion a year in revenue. Experts attribute the nations success to its farmers embrace of technological innovation. But even many on the political left say the government demands are too extreme, based on radical green fantasies and dodgy science. It seems to be very fast, said Wim de Vries, a professor at Wageningen University and Research who 10 years ago made alarmist claims about planetary boundaries.
MILITANT PANTHEIST NATURAL ENGLAND TAKEOVER LATEST: Natural England DESTROY Bill Potter’s traditional Birkbeck Common rearing of rare Greenholme fell ponies, using public money – The Unwilding of Birkbeck Common – Bill Lloyd investigates Natural England’s heavy-handed removal of semi-wild Fell ponies in the name of nature recovery. In a property-owning democracy, it is considered politically unacceptable simply to confiscate private land rights in the public interest. So in order to achieve its objective of “nature recovery” for the public good, Natural England (NE) has for the last 25 years used voluntary Agri-environment agreements, backed by compensation payments, with farmers and landowners. This voluntary model has been slowly tilting towards coercion, and major shifts took place with the Commons Act 2006 and the Agriculture Act 2020, under which state funding of “public goods” will replace state subsidy for agricultural food production. On particularly sensitive sites, such as commons and Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), when voluntary agreement is not forthcoming, NE can bring up the heavy guns and go to court. Once there, the eye-watering cost and legal sophistication of their barristers helps them run rings round any modest and unassuming commoner who dares to stand against them. So it was in the case of Bill Potter, (80) who until October 2021 grazed his Greenholme herd of 22 Fell ponies on Birkbeck (pronounced Bur-beck) Common, (714 hectares, 1764 acres) part of the Shap Fells SSSI in Cumbria. When he refused to sign up to voluntary grazing prescriptions which he felt were unreasonable and unacceptable, he was prosecuted for grazing without the consent of NE. He was found guilty and although the conviction was overturned on appeal, the end result was the removal from their natural habitat of one of the most important of the native Fell pony herds, which are the only free-running horse populations in the North of England. This outcome can certainly not be called “rewilding” although it might be “un-wilding”. The iconic Fell pony herds of Cumbria are the wildest equines in the Lake District National Park, now a World Heritage Site. Their natural habitat is the high mountain and moorland areas of Cumbria, known as the fells, and the Greenholme ponies had grazed Birkbeck Common since “time immemorial”1, probably since the Dark Ages. The herd was not domesticated, and most had never been handled. They were exceptionally hardy ponies, living outside at a height of 1500 feet above sea level, right through the winter, in rain, wind and snow. They thrived in some of the harshest conditions in the country, with no shelter and little supplementary feed, appearing with a lively new foal in the spring. It was their acclimatisation and evolution in severe winter conditions which produced exactly the characteristics which made them so special2, and yet by the perverse logic of the State’s nature recovery agenda their ability to live out on the fells all winter came into conflict with the “public good” and with vested interests who had other plans. The pressure applied on Bill Potter to conform to these “voluntary agreements” over 20 years eventually resulted in the removal of the herd. The story of how it was done and why it was done raises serious questions about the tactics used by NE.

Prince Charles Rocked by Reports of $1.2 Million Charity Donation From Bin Laden Family Britain’s royal family is no stranger to major controversy, particularly in recent years, and it surfaced again this weekend when the UK’s Sunday Times reported that Prince Charles accepted a donation from family members of Osama Bin Laden, mastermind of the 9/11 attacks on New York City. Read on to learn how this had happened and what does it mean for the future of the Royal Family. According to the Sunday Times, Prince Charles accepted a payment of $1.2 million from two of Osama Bin Laden’s half-brothers in 2013, two years after the al-Qaeda leader was killed by U.S. special forces. The Prince of Wales’s Charitable Fund (PWCF) accepted the donation, although close advisers counseled him not to do so, say reports.
Clarence House, the prince’s official residence and office, said the PWCF claimed it had done “thorough due diligence” on the donation, and the decision to accept the money was made by trustees, not the prince. “Any attempt to characterize it otherwise is false,” officials told the BBC. Bin Laden was disowned by his family in 1994. There’s no evidence the family was involved in his terrorist activities against the United States. Bakr bin Laden, patriarch of the large and wealthy Saudi family, and his brother Shafiq, made the donation. According to the Associated Press, Prince Charles is facing several allegations about impropriety at his charities. In July, the Sunday Times reported Prince Charles had accepted $3.1 million in cash, some of it delivered in bags and suitcases, from the former prime minister of Qatar. London police are investigating another claim that people connected to the Prince’s Foundation, a separate charity, offered to help a Saudi billionaire secure British citizenship and other favors in exchange for donations. The Prince of Wales’s Charitable Fund was founded in 1979; it officially describes its mission as “to transform lives and build sustainable communities by awarding grants to a wide range of good causes within our core funding themes: heritage and conservation, education, health and well-being, social inclusion, environment and countryside.”

Despite being patron Prince Charles had been unable to come to New York for the event, much to the chagrin of the organizers. “I was told by a deep throat not a million miles from the Prince’s household that shooting at Balmoral had taken precedence. Prince Andrew stepped into the breach.” It is not clear whether Charles pulled out before or after the terrorist attack that would ultimately drag America into wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. However, if the decision was taken before, Charles still had a full month to shunt his brother out of the way and take his place on the high profile visit, which took place on October 15, 2001. The book added: “Andrew did a fine job representing Britain. He bathed in the warm appreciation of New Yorkers. It would have been a golden opportunity for the Prince of Wales to escape the shadow of Princess Diana and make a fresh start with Americasomething, so I was told by a courtier, he and his advisers earnestly wanted.”

The NGO said it found Ukrainian forces using hospitals as de facto military bases in five locations. In 22 out of 29 schools that Amnesty visited, their researchers “either found soldiers using the premises or found evidence of current or prior military activity.” Amnesty said that as a result of Ukraine’s tactics, Russian strikes in populated areas killed civilians. However, the NGO said that not every Russian attack followed this pattern and that where they accused Moscow of war crimes in Kharkiv, they did not find Ukraine using civilian areas as bases. Amnesty also said Ukraine’s tactics do not excuse Russia’s “indiscriminate attacks.” Ukraine reacted angrily to Amnesty’s report, with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba saying he was “outraged.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused the NGO of “helping the terrorists” by publishing the report. Callamard called on Ukraine to ensure that the areas it uses as bases are away from populated areas. “Militaries should never use hospitals to engage in warfare, and should only use schools or civilian homes as a last resort when there are no viable alternatives,” she said.
