The world Derek and Emily envision is one where we donât need police, we donât need prisons because people have the resources the love and the support and the peace they need in their lives. Nationwide 43% of people come back to jail within their first 3 years of getting out alone. Yet less than 6% of people who graduate with some degree in prison ever come back to jail at all.
Unchained is co-led by husband and wife team Derek and Emily NaPier Singletary. Derek is a Black man with a lifetime of experience fighting oppression and is currently incarcerated in the New York state prison system pursuing his Bachelor's degree from inside the walls. Emily is a white woman who has worked to dismantle systems of punishment for over 15 years as an organizer, advocate, researcher, and educator.
