Ishmael Reed highlights important details of the life of “The Greatest” that are being overlooked in the reviews of the life of Muhammad Ali. Reed points out The Nation of Islam played a large role in the heroic moment when Ali refused to be drafted during the Vietnam war and during the 3 years Ali was prevented from following his profession, the black Muslims(as they were called) stood by him and enabled him to survive. Reed takes the occasion to argue for a boxer’s union to give fighters some protection from promoters and managers who put them at risk.
