Today’s Inspire Indeed features Mary Elfner, Director of the Virginia Audubon Council. This statewide council coordinates the efforts of the six Audubon chapters in Virginia (including the local Richmond Audubon Society) to conserve bird habitat and educate the public about bird stewardship. There are 3.5 million square acres of Important Bird Areas (IBAs) in VA, including the James River IBA its related initiatives here in Richmond, like the Great Blue Heron Rookery, the Gone to the Birds Festival, and the Team Wood Thrush program for 6th graders. The Audubon Society encourages youth to learn about ornithology, conservation, environmental science, and the value of the natural world. As you enjoy this spring weather, pause to appreciate the beauty and complexity of bird sounds! For more information, visit
