On April 13, demonstrations took place in Washington DC and across the country against the use of drones that have killed thousands in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and around the globe. The Washington demonstration, organized by the ANSWER Coalition and endorsed by dozens of individuals and organizations, brings attention to what is mounting public concern over drones as weapons of war. Organizer Eugene Puryear calls in to talk about the march and rally in DC.
In response to a Freedom of Information Act request from the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund, the CIA has officially stated that it neither confirms nor denies knowledge or participation in a plot to poison or assassinate by any other means the late President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela. Latin America solidarity activist Gloria La Riva joins us to discuss the implications of the CIA's official response and the repeated U.S. efforts to derail the revolutionary process unfolding in Venezuela.
On the first of April, a team of Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam veterans, active-duty soldiers and military families launched an outreach and visibility campaign at Fort Hood, Texas, the biggest U.S. military base in the world, to bring a simple message to soldiers: âYou donât have to go to Afghanistan.â The effort was timed ahead of a May deployment of troops to that country. Kevin Baker of March Forward has just returned from Texas, and joins the program to discuss the mobilization.
