Campaigners are fighting to save an historic cinema in Bristol that is threatened with demolition. Redfield Cinema is an art-deco entertainment venue that first opened in 1912, and has survived the test of time. Its 130 seats remain largely intact, as is an art deco frieze that still surrounds the former screen and runs across the ceiling. But the cinema - which sits above a J D Wetherspoon pub in St George - is now endangered. The St Georges Hall pub will cease trading on 19 September, having been sold, and campaigners fear the site will be turned into flats. More than 3,000 people have signed a petition to Bristol City Council calling for them to classify the cinema as an asset of community value. The campaign says the petition offers a "huge opportunity for local people to have a community cinema and for the city to preserve a real cultural treasure."They added that "to demolish it would be a tremendous waste."

Ex-Royal Navy officer and Somerset council leader Richard Pallister on trial for alleged sex abuse Richard Pallister was charged with 36 historical sex abuse allegations.Credit: ITV News A former council leader and Royal Navy officer "used his power and presence" to groom and sexually assault his victims over a 17-year period, a jury has been told. Richard Pallister is on trial for dozens of historical sex abuse allegations, including against children as young as 13. He has been charged with 33 counts of indecent assault and three counts of gross indecency with a child. The 73-year-old denies all of the charges and a trial began at Taunton Crown Court on Monday 6 September. Pallister was the leader of South Somerset District Council between 2011 and 2018 and an air traffic controller at the Royal Naval Air Station base at Yeovilton, Somerset. The court heard all of the allegations date back to 1987 and 2004. Prosecutor Charles Row opened the case against Pallister - known as Ric - and said he was a big strong man who forced his unwanted sexual attention on four victims who said he was relentless. He said Pallister - who was a Lib Dem councillor and also a church warden and sidesman - was a big personality who was enthusiastic and energetic in organising events. But Mr Row said he was a bit overpowering, he was physically big and strong and invaded personal space. He said he would take peoples faces in his hands and kiss them on the lips and embrace bodies. Mr Row said it became the norm and people would say oh thats just Ric. But he told the jury: "It was to be a front for more sinister behaviour."

Questioned by a Senate committee about issues with the project, Australias Defense Secretary Greg Moriarty said: "It became clear to me we were having challenges ... over the last 15 to 12 months." He said his government had been considering its options, including what it could do if it was "unable to proceed" with the French deal. Moriartys admission came after his government in April refused to sign a contract for the next phase of the French submarine project, giving Naval Group until this month to comply with its demands. There were reports dating back to the beginning of this year that Canberra was seeking to walk away.

Also UK deaths rates in the Covid year are about the same as 2002/2003 â but hospital beds are down a lot. - Tracking covid-19 excess deaths across countries - Sept 2021 - In many parts of the world, official death tolls undercount the total number of fatalities --As covid-19 has spread around the world, people have become grimly familiar with the death tolls that their governments publish each day. Unfortunately, the total number of fatalities caused by the pandemic may be even higher, for several reasons. First, the official statistics in many countries exclude victims who did not test positive for coronavirus before dyingwhich can be a substantial majority in places with little capacity for testing. Second, hospitals and civil registries may not process death certificates for several days, or even weeks, which creates lags in the data. And third, the pandemic has made it harder for doctors to treat other conditions and discouraged people from going to hospital, which may have indirectly caused an increase in fatalities from diseases other than covid-19. One way to account for these methodological problems is to use a simpler measure, known as excess deaths: take the number of people who die from any cause in a given region and period, and then compare it with a historical baseline from recent years. We have used statistical models to create our baselines, by predicting the number of deaths each region would normally have recorded in 2020 and 2021. Many Western countries, and some nations and regions elsewhere, regularly publish data on mortality from all causes. The table below shows that, in most places, the number of excess deaths (compared with our baseline) is greater than the number of covid-19 fatalities officially recorded by the government. The thing that really does use the secular arm is Science. And the creed that really is levying tithes and capturing schools, the creed that really is enforced by fine and imprisonment, the creed that really is proclaimed not in sermons but in statutes, and spread not by pilgrims but by policemen --- that creed is the great but disputed system of thought which began with Evolution and has ended in Eugenics. Materialism is really our established Church; for the Government will really help it to persecute its heretics. Vaccination, in its hundred years of experiment, has been disputed almost as much as baptism in its approximate two thousand. But it seems quite natural to our politicians to enforce vaccination; and it would seem to them madness to enforce baptism. I am not frightened of the word "persecution" when it is attributed to the churches; nor is it in the least as a term of reproach that I attribute it to the men of science. It is as a term of legal fact. If it means the imposition by the police of a widely disputed theory, incapable of final proof --- then our priests are not now persecuting, but our doctors are. The imposition of such dogmas constitutes a State Church --- in an older and stronger sense than any that can be applied to any supernatural Church to-day. There are still places where the religious minority is forbidden to assemble or to teach in this way or that; and yet more where it is excluded from this or that public post. THE case I am now going to relate is certainly the most important that I ever experienced and is perhaps the most important spy-case in the whole history of espionage. The latter is a tall claim which I shall do my best to substantiate. but first I should like the reader to appreciate that the claim is not made merely because I played a part in unmasking the man who did unparalleled damage to the Allied cause. Let us consider the facts. Had Field Marshal Montgomerys daring bid for a spearhead attack across the Maas and Neder Rijn bridgeheads succeeded and had the main forces linked up with the gallant paratroopers at Arnhem, a wedge of armour would have been thrust at the heart of Germany. Successful exploitation of the thrust would probably have ended the war in Europe before Christmas, 1944, six months sooner than was in fact the case. There must be few strategists or tacticians who could deny this probability. It is impossible to measure the saving in the lives of soldiers and civilians which would have resulted from such a shortening of the war. Hundreds of millions of pounds worth of devastations of land and buildings would have thus been a voided. The British Government alone was spending some £6,000.000 per day on the war effort at that time. Had the European war been shortened by six months, it would have saved a gigantic sum in the neighbourhood of £2.900,000,000 for the Exchequer. When one considers what other Governments. notably the United States, were jointly spending in prosecuting the war, the moneys that might have been saved and later devoted to reconstruction for peace amount to astronomical figures almost without significance to the average wage-earner. More important still, bad the Western Allies penetrated far into Germany and occupied all of Berlin and West Germany before the Russians had arrived from the East, the whole sad story of Allied relations since 1945 might have been far different, and, had the Western Allies been able to " deal from strength," possibly far happier
