Jeremy Corbyn slams University of Liverpool job cuts - Jeremy Corbyn slammed job cuts at the University of Liverpool during a protest today. The former Labour leader was speaking at a protest organised by the University and College Union (UCU) as part of their campaign against compulsory redundancies. Two people in the Health and Life Sciences faculty are due to lose their jobs as part of a shake-up the university says is intended to allow investment in tackling extreme health inequality in the region. The number of job losses was originally 47 before negotiations, strikes, a marking boycott and protests by staff and students knocked that down. The union is currently on day five of a 10-day strike. Jeremy Corbyn spoke to the crowd filling University Square outside the building housing university managerial staff. Many attending were there specifically to see him. He said: "In winning this campaign to defend those jobs you will stop a university going after the cleaners, the catering workers, the contractors and all the other workers in the university. Youre showing solidarity with all of them. "You will also be giving a message to the university and further education sector all across the country that where the Tory government, as it were, as it is, comes after working class jobs and living standards with a new face of austerity, were here, were ready and we are fighting back." The University of Liverpool is the largest employer in Riverside constituency, whose MP Kim Johnson spoke at the rally. She was joined by Ian Byrne MP, whose law graduate daughter was affected by delayed grades due to the marking boycott. Guild of Students deputy president Chloe Field, UCU general secretary Jo Grady, and Merseyside BLM founder Chantelle Lunt also spoke alongside students at the university.

I left the Party after some years, as far as I remember because of Neil Kinnockâs failure to support the Minersâ strike. I re-joined the Party in 2015 because, like hundreds of thousands of others, I was enthused not only by Jeremy Corbynâs progressive message but also by the enthusiastic response from large numbers of people, especially young people and people from racialised communities. I saw hope, optimism, ideas and a willingness to work hard to achieve change in the interests of ordinary people, rather than Corporations and the ruling class; a possibility for a programme based on peace, an end to austerity, for lifting people up and for international solidarity. This hope has been destroyed and that is the most wicked aspect of these attacks on the left. I have consistently contributed to the Party over the past 6 years; branch secretary, active campaigner in elections, street stalls and other such actions and was a councillor for three years from 2018 until May 2021 and Labour Group Chair for two of those years. I have always been involved in the struggle for justice, equality and socialism. I worked for an aid agency in Kandahar at the height of the Taliban regime and remained in Afghanistan until just prior to the British deployment to Helmand. I travelled around the country working on electoral and justice issues, as a journalist and later political advisor to the EU Ambassador, where I followed military issues including the security sector, disarmament and drugs. I also sat in on meetings at with the Coalition, Nato and the Afghan Government. I later published a book and a PhD on issues surrounding âlegitimacyâ in relation to the Afghan intervention. The failure by the West to understand this concept is why the Taliban are back in power. The truth is that the British bounded into Afghanistan like an innocent Labrador.
While many fear the Taliban return, the human rights issue is not as straightforward as portrayed. In January 2002, women in Kabul complained bitterly to me about posters of the recently killed General Massoud, saying âat least with the Taliban we knew the rulesâ. They remembered the violations of the early 1990s when warlords who were, by 2002, our allies wreaked havoc. But when I worked on aid projects in Kandahar and Herat during the Taliban regime back in 2000, I found many Afghans to be supportive. Although their rights were restricted, their memories of the civil war were far worse. Today as western media react hysterically to the Taliban return, I am reminded of the days after 9/11. Back then, warnings of a respected Mujahid Commander from the âResistance Royaltyâ Arsala family in Eastern Afghanistan were drowned out by calls for bombing and retribution for 9/11. Abdul Haq told Bush and Blair ânotâ to bomb Afghanistan because, he said, it would disrupt the agreements he had made with Soviet era allies who were then in the Taliban regime (Afghans do change sides) and with tribal leaders, including General Massoud. The idea was to collapse the by then unpopular regime from within; which is what has just happened to the Ghani regime.
