I'm guest-hosting WRIR's Cause and Effect Show today. It is one of my favorites to host and to listen to. Each week's host selects an artist than digs deep into the bands and artists that influenced the featured performer and in turns the bands and artists they influenced. Stream the show every Saturday from 1 PM to 3 PM @ www.wrir.org.
Hey Listeners,
Haberdasher here with special guest co-host, Jeff White and weâre focusing on the career of The Band. I felt like the fund drive was the perfect time to highlight the career on what I think is about one of the best bands of all-time. Jeff agrees and we have both read the bios, seen the rock-docs, and have loved this band for years.
The Band sounds too mainstream? Ha! Jeff and I have made it a goal to play lots of tracks that we hope you are unfamiliar with and our goal was to do a Band show and actually play very few Band tracks (we played 2 that are actually credited to The Band.)
So in the event quick recap â The Band is Levon Helm, Robbie, Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Garth Hudson. They started playing in 1958 as the back-up band for rockabilly singer, Ronnie Hawkins and then in 1965 rose to national prominence by backing Dylan on his first electric tour and making several records with Dylan. The original line-up released 7 studio albums (although one, Moondog Matinee is a collection of covers) as well as several acclaimed live recordings and of course the Last Waltz the album that accompanies the film that documents their farewell performance. They also recorded several albums with Dyan including the legendary Basement Tapes and the live record Before The Flood.
Jeff and I decided to break the show up into several sections:
⢠Intro o The Band â Rockinâ Chair â show opener o Influences â country / soul / R and B / blues â radio â big signals o Lee Dorsey (they cover Dorsey on Moondog Matinee) o Sonny Boy Williamson II (they Cover Williamson on same) o Bill Monroe â (Del McCoury on vocals) o Hank Williams â My Bucketâs Got A Hole in It ⢠Early work o Ronnie Hawkins o John Hammond â The Band is the back-up band on this record and we chose a Bo Diddley cover an influence o Levon and the Hawks o The Band â super hot cover â Festival Express â showing their roots o Dylan â careers / legends intertwined ⢠Collaborators / Friends / Family o Happy and Artie Traum â close friends on The Band from Woodstock days o John Simon â the 6th member â produced first twolegendary records o Jim Weider â guitarist with reformed Band line-up o Hirth Martinez produced by RR o Cate Brothers â old friends from AK â Levon helped them get record contract / played with Ronnie Hawkins o Libby Titus â (Levonâs first wife â first female vocals on River Hymn / her own recording or Dr. Johnâs Pretty Libby) o Amy Helm â Levon and Libbyâ daughter / brand new record â release date in June o Dr. John â Pretty Libby â frequent Band collaborator â Last Waltz of course â ⢠The Last Waltz â canât talk about The Band without talking about Last Waltz â incredible â and influential concert film â if you have always wondered why some of artists were part of the concert â the Hoskyns book it makes it clear with the various back storis o Muddy Waters â Bobby Charles cover recorded at Levonâs studio with his Midnight Ramble team â Last Waltz had Muddy with Bob Margolin that was a regular on Cville bar circuit in early 80s o Eric Clapton â from No Reason to Cry â Band plays on Rick D cowrote and sings o Neil Young â Revolution Blues â from On the Beach members of band on record ⢠Solo â Sum Greater Than Parts ⢠Levon â Move Along Train â Electric Dirt Farmer ⢠Garth The Breakers ï§ Bands they influenced â EVERYONE â Americana / rock artists of day o George Harrison â All Things Must Pass â Even The Beatles â Harrison had highest praise for them â best band ever â Harrison wrote the title tracks form his 3-record opus â imagined Levon singing it o New Basement Tapes â Duncan and Jimmy â The New Basement Tapes is a British-American musical supergroup made up of members Jim James, Elvis Costello, Marcus Mumford, Taylor Goldsmith, and Rhiannon Giddens. The group is best known for Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes, their 2014 album which consists of tracks based on newly uncovered lyrics handwritten by Bob Dylan in 1967 during the recording of his 1975 album with The Band, The Basement Tapes. THE FACT THIS PROJECT WAS DONE SPEAKS TO INFLUENCE o Jackie DeShannon â The Weight â a track like no other â almost every and anyone can sing along to go out for live music â bands cover it
