Ramona Africa, a surviver of the Philadelphia police bombing of the MOVE organization headquarters in 1985 spoke as part of a national tour to free Mumia Abu Jamal and nine members of the MOVE organization who have been in prison since the late 1970's on trumped up murder convictions stemming from the 1978 police asault on MOVE headquarters in Phildelphia.
A video documentary about the 1978 police raid was shown just prior to Ms. Africa's talk. This video shows brutality by Philadelphia police, the virulent campaign by the Philadelphia city government to eradicate MOVE by systematic police repression and trumped up charges, and the way local (official) Phildelphia media participated to aid this campaign.
Abu Jamal drew the wrath of Philadelphia officials by reporting sympathetically on MOVE, and their campaign to free their 9 railroaded members. Public opinion in support of MOVE was growing. Rather than be held accountable, officials decided to bomb the home where MOVE activists were living in 1985.
