sophie harkat joins us on the eve of human rights day. spohie will speak about her experience since last dec. 10th when her husband was detained by the Canadian government under the security certificate - which has also been called a secret trail certificate. Today - her husband remains in jail and faces deportation to Algeria where he could be killed.
Mohammed has been in Canada since 1995, and was given refugee status in 1997 after making the claim that he faced persecution from the Algerian government if he were to return. On December 10th, 2002 Mohammed was arrested outside his home in Ottawa by undercover police. Since then he has been in jail without any charges under the allegation that he is linked to Islamic terrorist groups and activities.
His lawyer and Sophie have yet to see any evidence to support the allegation - and the security certificate could allow Mohammed to be deported back to Algeria without then ever seeing any evidence - hence the name secret trial certificates.
