Cancer Action NY has worked to educate St. Lawrence County residents on the subject of carcinogen exposure minimization since the founding of our organization in January 2000. In the early years of this endeavor we focused on eliminating open waste burning, a major source of dioxin releases to the environment. During the past several years the work has evolved into the provision of educational outreach on the subject of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) exposure minimization.
As we have endeavored to provide public educational outreach concerning carcinogen exposure minimization we have worked to motivate local, state and federal government to provide similar outreach. The best results have come at the local level. Numerous town governments in St. Lawrence County have placed POPs exposure minimization information on their websites. St. Lawrence County Legislator Scott Sutherland made a diligent attempt to create an educational outreach on POPs exposure minimization within the St. Lawrence County Public Health Department. The county legislature chose not to take this action.
On August 13, 2013, St. Lawrence County Legislator Scott Sutherland and Cancer Action NY co-founders Lewis M. Shepard and Donald L. Hassig engaged in a discussion of past efforts and future steps toward a day when all county residents will be knowledgeable on the subjects of POPs exposure and damages to health. What was said makes ever so clear the fact that POPs exposure minimization education is moving forward in St. Lawrence County.
