This is the full 11-1-10 episode of the Labor Express Radio program.
First, weâll hear from Jorge Ortiz of the Chicago Anti-Eviction Campaign. A couple weeks ago we aired audio from a rally the campaign held outside the office of Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart. The campaign was demanding he declare a moratorium on all economically motivated evictions. Within days of that broadcast, Dart announced to the media that he was calling a halt to some evictions. But is the moratorium Dart has embraced as comprehensive as the campaign would like? Jorge will give us the details.
Later in the program weâll get a full update on the struggle of the Whittier School mothers to save La Casita. The occupation has ended but the struggle continues. The mothers declared an end to the occupation on Thursday upon receiving in writing from Ron Huberman, CEO of the Chicago Public Schools, a guarantee that the field house will not be demolished. But their fight to get a library in La Casita and for the city to pay for repairs to the structure is ongoing. Weâll hear from a number of those involved in the struggle at Whittier.
