America's "peace-keeping" military: Keeping Haiti open for business... Submitted by Cris Andreae on Tue, 03/02/2010 - 11:16am program: Air Cascadia
Todayâs guest, Ray Laforest, has been a fighter for social justice for most of his life. He was born in Haiti and at age 13 joined an underground organization against the âPapa Docâ dictatorship. In 1968, I was forced to flee to the U.S. Ray is active with the WBAI Justice and Unity Campaign (www.justiceunity.org), and he has been part of the leadership of the most progressive Haitian organizations in the Diaspora; the Haitian Coalition for Justice, the Haitian/Dominican Action Group and have long supported liberation struggles from Cuba to Central America to Southern Africa. A member of the National Coordinating Committee for Mumia Abu-Jamal, Ray Laforest is a longtime labor organizer, currently a staff organizer with AFSCME District Council 1707. And that is why I invited him back to Air Cascadia after his first âappearanceâ during KBOOâs Haiti fund-raising drive.
I asked Ray about the real role of American âpeace-keepingâ forces currently deployed in Haiti, the role of Fanmi Lavalas partisans and the possibility of Aristideâs return in some post-traumatic parallel universe. But the Big Question still crouches in the shadows, waiting for the flame: Haitiâs struggling labor movement will rise, reorganize and return â but in what shape? And will it use the disaster to shed ties to multinational masters or will Rene Prevalâs Friends in High Places crack the whip.

Only in America: Cops shoot civilians scot-free/enviro-activists sentenced to 22 years for property crimes... Submitted by Cris Andreae on Mon, 03/01/2010 - 11:41am program: Air Cascadia
Marie Mason is a 46 year old mother of two. She is an avid community gardener, a musician, a writer, an Earth First! organizer, a volunteer for a free herbal healthcare collective and one of America's growing population of political prisoners. Granted, Marie's is an extreme instance of the miscarriage of justice and judicial heebie-jeebies. On March 10, 2008 Marie was arrested by federal agents. She has been charged with involvement with a December,1999 arson at a Michigan State University genetics laboratory at Agriculture Hall and a January, 2000 arson of logging equipment in Mesick, Michigan. Both arsons were claimed by the Earth Liberation Front.
The burning of MSUâs Agriculture Hall was the first time arson had been used to further the cause against genetic engineering (GE) in the US. Furthermore, it was the first time the ELF had taken credit for any GE-related action. Mainstream media played pathos and claimed the act deprived starving children of genetically modified glop. But MSUâs research was funded by the US government and corporations like Monsanto, which then dump the GMO surplus on developing nations destroying indigenous economies and guaranteeing that recipient economies remain permanently indebted to the IMF and WTO. In recent years resistance to GE crops and seeds is on the rise. Agribusiness still sells significant risks to human health, cultural identity, biological diversity and ecological integrity. Agribusiness still kills. And agribusiness has the money to move policy and politicians into 'compromising positions'.
