In the third hour, we spoke with Langdon Roberts and Stephanie Winn of New Earth Exchange, a membership network for local businesses committed to environmental sustainability and mutual-aid. It is a "bottom-up grassroots economics" that is sustainable and just. They spoke about the benefits of a local currency: and are in the process of creating a local currency that will kick-start our sluggish economy by increasing sales of local goods and services. The money stays in the community instead of disappearing to out-of-area banks and businesses. It cannot be used in chain stores on online ouotlets.
We learned that the alternative currency is entirely legal and would benefit the low income and underserved populations as well.
