Julian Burnside is an Australian barrister, writer and a refugee activist. He worked for Liberty Victoria on the Tampa litigation and has since been representing refugees in Nauru, Baxter, Woomera and other detention centres around Australia. He won the 2004 Australian Law Council Human Rights award. He has insights that will shock even those who are fully aware of the issues faced by refugees in this country.
In August 2004, Julian gave a speech on the treatment of refugees at the Australia at the Crossroads public meeting held in Brisbane before the election. None of the issues that Julian discusses have gone away or have been adequately addressed by the Australian government.
Refugee activists from Australia are converging on Baxter detention centre in South Australia at Easter this year from March 25th 2005. For more info check out: www.baxter05.info
