After the dirty deed, Booth bolts D.C. with Ed Henson (Hynson) only minutes behind. They join up in the Maryland countryside.
David Herold, who was not in D.C. during the assassination, is picked up hungover at his home in Maryland on suspicion. A day later, Herold is in the custody of a posse of National Detective Police officers using him as bait to find other conspirators. The posse does land one: James Boyd, the one who was supposed to have kidnapped Lincoln. That night Herold and Boyd escape the posse and head for Virginia.
From this moment on, two pairs of fugitives are on the loose in Lower Maryland.
Booth and Henson and Boyd and Herold had hoped to hitch a ride on one of two shipsâBooth to the Indian Queen in the Patuxent and Boyd to the Indian Prince in Nanjemoy Creek, an eastern inlet off the Potomac River. Both vessels had been conscripted to transport the kidnappers and possibly Lincoln. But the ship captains, waiting longer than they should have, know something is amiss and take their ships into Chesapeake Bay, leaving all to fend for themselves.
Not very far in front of Boyd and Herold, Booth and Hensonâwithout a captive Lincolnâchange plans and hunker down near Popeâs Creek to stage a crossing of the Potomac. Boyd and Herold travel farther west to Nanjemoy Creek to prepare for their crossing.
Both pairs take crude ferries across the Potomac and the Rappahannock rivers. But not long after the second crossing, both pairs, unaware of each otherâs presence and proximity, make decisions that will bring death to one and freedom to the other.
