Today we feature our very own Alice Rothchild, MD, speaking in New York City about her most recent book, "Condition Critical: Life and Death in Israel/Palestine." She describes the book as "a curated collection of blog essays and analysis."
Alice is an obstetrician-gynecologist who has worked in the health care reform and womenâs movements for many years, as well as Palestine justice activism. She is also a prolific blogger and a riveting speaker. Her previous books include "Broken Promises, Broken Dreams: Stories of Jewish and Palestinian Trauma and Resilience" and "On the Brink: Israel and Palestine on the Eve of the 2014 Gaza Invasion." Since 1997, Alice has focused much of her energy on understanding the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Brought up in a religious Jewish family, Alice was freed from the Zionist myths she was brought up with by her zest for truth, justice, inquiry, and compassion for the human condition. She is now spending full time documenting her frequent travels to Palestine/Israel and elevating the Palestinian narrative through her books, films, lectures, and blogs.
In occupied Palestine, everyone who moves encounters multiple military checkpoints staffed with crazed, sadistic Israeli soldiers brandishing loaded guns. The soldiers engage in relentless searches, verbal abuse, and threats of instant execution. Jews seeking justice for Palestinians are especially despised, and so receive special abuse at checkpoints. Alice begins her talk by describing her treatment at one of them.
