Accounts from surviving veterans conflict with the notion that Canada's participation in the senseless meat-grinder of the First World War led to a patriotic conscience. And the introduction of conscription nearly tore 'Canada' apart, placing immense strain on French-English relations.

Thousands of Canadians were drowned in mud and blown to bits and pieces in a war that solved nothing. There is today a jarring disconnect between the Canadian mourning and soul-searching, seen in monuments and other remembrances, and the 'valour' and 'glory' that our government and NGOs now promote.
