Bio: ABOUT YOUR HOST: I first began volunteering on the radio at WNEC at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire in the fall of 1984 when my old school mate Jeff Fisher and I were listening to the radio 'thinking' we were listening to WNEC, so we called to make a request. The guy who answered the phone claimed that they were not even broadcasting at the moment (we were actually hearing WSPS). That man was the infamous Stan Barker, who invited us both to come volunteer. I volunteered at WNEC-FM for over 25 years. In that time I played a wide variety of music. Starting out playing mainstream rock, I later began my first specialty program 'Music For The Mind', which was an all-Grateful Dead show. Henniker was always a bastion for Deadheads, so that show was hugely popular, and it ran for 7 years (5 under my watch). After turning that show over to Frank 'The Bear On The Air' Tillotson, I began 'The Folk Show', later renamed 'The Song Swap' from 1994 through 2000. Simultaneously during this period I took over WNEC's bluegrass show 'Music For The Mountain' which was begun in 1991 by Ken Ashton. Ken played 'bluegrass and beyond', with a large dose of 'newgrass', etc. I took over for him and his immediate successor Mary Krueger around 1997 and moved toward a more traditional bluegrass format. I had been a huge bluegrass nut for years, so it was great fun to take over that program. Eventually, I also became involved with various bluegrass festivals as an emcee, and as a founding contributor to Crossroads Magazine, Rootsworld, Country Standard Time, and other publications. For a time, WNEC was broadcasting online and I had great fun every week with far-flung listeners as far away as Russia, and we had a core group from all over that would always join in and keep me company in our show 'chatroom'... WNEC suffered a major technical breakdown early in 2001 due to a storm, and I took about a year off, coming back in early 2002 with a kitchen sink show featuring all sorts of music called 'Chip's Midlife Crisis'. Later, I changed the name of this show to 'Chip'Show', and started adding in more acoustic music again, as well as what my son likes to call my 'hippie music'... ;-) Also during this period, I would occasionally revive the old Grateful Dead 'Music For The Mind' program on certain weeks. This went on until I left WNEC for what I thought was the final time in 2006. I did return again in 2009 at the urging of station management and decided to return to what I do best, folk and acoustic music. 'Out of the Woods' was born. The show ran every Friday night on WNEC-FM until the fall of 2011 when WNEC decided after nearly 40 years not to renew their license with the FCC. Presently, I am in the process of moving 'Out of the Woods' to the studios and facilities at Colby Sawyer College in New London, New Hampshire on WSCS-FM. In the meantime, I will be producing unaffiliated versions of 'Out of the Woods' in my own studio and posting them here. I hope to post the WSCS programs here as well.
